McKenzie Banner - September 09, 2008
HUNTINGDON - The iconic Colonel Reb has entered the witness protection program. After McKenzie Special School District was informed to stop using image by Ole Miss, he went to an underground status. Colonel Reb is no longer displayed on the McKenzie High School Web site or the center of the field at Rebel Stadium. His image is no longer on the school's letterheads or the gymnasium walls.
Kristi Halsey of The Funky Banana in Huntingdon created a special T-shirt for Colonel Reb's underground status. In the copyrighted artwork, Colonel Reb is displayed wearing Halloween-style eyeglasses with a big nose and eyebrows. The theme is "I proudly support the RWPP - Rebel Witness Protection Program."
"We've sold several of the shirts," said Halsey. "The funny part is someone from West Carroll came up with the idea." She said people from all over are talking about the fact the Rebels must give up their mascot.
Halsey, a talented artist, said she has created a different prototype mascot for the school's consideration.
